Indulgent Bathing

, 24 October 2008

A bath should be an occasion, and a truly perfect bath can take a great deal of planning and preparation. Here is some inspiration if you are so inclined!

Atmosphere
Creating the right atmosphere is incredibly important while bathing. This can be achieved in the following ways:

Lighting
A bath should be taken in muted daylight, by candlelight or other soft lighting, or in complete darkness.

Music
Some people prefer silence while bathing, but I find music can help to set the tone. Search your playlist for something soothing, and maybe a little bit haunting.

Bubbles et al
When it comes to enhancing the bath water there are a lot of options to choose from. Possibilities include bubble bath, essential oils, bath ballistics or melts, food colouring, or an extravagant combination of the above.

Decorations
If you are planning on whiling away the hours in a bath, make sure your surroundings are inviting. This could involve:
  • Fresh flowers
  • Fairy lights
  • Balloons
  • Rose petals
  • Scented candles
  • Goldfish in small glass bowls
  • Crystals

Refreshments
There is something incredibly decadent about eating and drinking in the bath. My favourite bathtime refreshments include:

Sweets
Such as chocolate, confectionary, or ice cream served in a small bowl with an equally small spoon. Be sure to avoid anything which will creates crumbs.

Fresh Fruit
As long as it's bite-sized and easy to eat. I suggest cherries, grapes, or strawberries. Dipping in chocolate is optional!

Beverages
A brightly coloured cocktail or a glass of wine is a perfect accompaniment to a bath. Fresh fruit juice, ice cold water or homemade lemonade are also excellent options.

Entertainment
Although there may be some practicalities which need to be considered, there are a range of activities which can be incorporated into a bath:
  • Dreaming
  • Reading
  • Meditation
  • Playing cards
  • Watching movies
  • Writing or drawing
  • Blowing bubbles

Ooh I could really go for a nice relaxing bath after reading that, and I usually take showers! That's really made me want a hot bath with candles and a good album on repeat. I can't read in the bath though, I'm far too clumsy!

Yes, reading in the bath is harder than it sounds :)

Greetings Bridey! What wonderful ideas for the ultimate bath. I myself am a shower singer, rock-n-roll full blast, with just a night light for mood. I must say, I'm a huge ice cream nut and love the idea of refreshments ~ may have to go back to baths again. Thanks for all the great ideas!!!
